Aluminum: Sometimes From the Treatment Process Itself

Aluminum has an unusual source compared to most of the metals on this list — sometimes it comes from the very process used to treat your water.

What It Is

What the EPA Says

The EPA's secondary (aesthetic, non-enforceable) standard for aluminum is a range of 0.05 to 0.2 mg/L, set for water clarity and color rather than health.

Aluminum can occur naturally from geological sources, but it's also sometimes present as a residual from aluminum-based coagulants (such as alum) that some municipal treatment plants use to clarify water during processing, settling out suspended particles before the water reaches you.

Watch For This

Signs to Look For

  • Slightly cloudy or discolored water
  • Municipal water from a plant that uses alum-based coagulation in its treatment process
  • No recent water test to confirm the actual level
  • A well in an area with aluminum-rich soil or bedrock
How We Fix It

Reverse Osmosis System

Reverse Osmosis System

Reverse osmosis filtration reduces aluminum along with other dissolved metals and particulates, regardless of whether it originated naturally or from the municipal treatment process.

FAQ

Aluminum: Common Questions

Some municipal plants use aluminum-based coagulants (like alum) to clarify water, helping suspended particles settle out during treatment. A small residual can remain in the finished water.

The EPA regulates it only as a non-enforceable aesthetic guideline, for clarity and color, not as a health-based standard.
